Illinois Surcharges on Winning Wagers
- Beginning February 1, 2014, Illinois imposed a complex tiered surcharge requirement on winning wagers. This means there are multiple payouts for every Illinois pool as follows:
- If you are physically at an Illinois track, your winning wagers are not subject to a surcharge.
- If you are not an Illinois resident, and you made your wager online through an ADW site, your winning wagers are not subject to a surcharge.
- If you are an Illinois resident, and you made your wager online through an ADW site, your winning wagers are subject to a surcharge of 0.38%.
- If you are at an ITW location in the state of Illinois, your winning wagers are subject to a surcharge of 1.7%.
- If you are at an OTB location in the State of Illinois, your winning wagers are subject to a surcharge of 2.7%.
Why does this only get charged for some of my wagers?
The Illinois Surcharge applies to all wagers as listed above. The host tracks will typically cover the surcharge for you. This is why you do not see the change on most wagers. The tracks pay for this surcharge from the "Breakage" (the cents left over after rounding from the nearest $.05 or $.10). Sometimes the surcharges add up to more than what is left in the "breakage". When this happens, you see the surcharge deducted from your wager.
