Whitelisting, or allow listing, is a cybersecurity approach that approves specific email addresses, IP addresses, domain names, or applications while denying all others. To whitelist a site, you must adjust settings in the program blocking the site, such as a pop-up blocker or antivirus software. Each program provides options to either block everything except listed sites or block only specified sites. The process varies across browsers and programs, and instructions can typically be found by searching online with the term "whitelist" and the program name.
What is Whitelisting?
A whitelist (allow list) is a cybersecurity strategy that approves a list of email addresses, IP addresses, domain names or applications, while denying all others.
How do I whitelist a site?
This will depend upon what is blocking the site. It can something simple like a pop up blocker, or can include things such as your anti-virus software. Each program that is blocking the site should have a place for adding the web address for the site you want to be allowed through the block as well as a place to list the ones you never want to be allowed through the block. This gives you two options: Block everything but these sites I list, or just block these sites I list and let everything else through.
The location will vary from web browser to web browser and from program to program. The easiest way to find the location to whitelist, or directions is to do an internet search with the word whitelist and the program name.
